The Westfield Boys Basketball team could be a strong contender for a Western Mass Championship this upcoming 2017-2018 season.

Last season the Bomber boys qualified for the tournament after a disappointing 2015-2016 season. The Bombers were led by their two star Seniors Rodney Bernard and Gabe Piepergerdes and received a lot of help from Juniors, Aidan Dunn, Luis Castro, Javier Santos, and Kam Wells. With many returning players the Bombers could have a great chance of going far in the tournament this year.

The Bombers are coached by Josh Balestracci who has coached the team for the past 3 seasons. He has led his teams to the tournament two out of the three seasons that he has coached.

Lifelong fan WHS Senior Hannah Jarvis stated, “I think the Bombers will have a really good season because they have returning seniors who work well together.” Jarvis believes Northampton will be the biggest threat to the Bombers this season “…because they are well coached and always bring the game to us.”

Dunn, a three year varsity player, is very optimistic for this upcoming season. “I think that we could go far if we play our hardest for 32 minutes every game.”

The Bombers had their playoff run end short last year when they met the number one seed Central in the first round of the playoffs. Dunn stated, “We can’t dwell on last season and we have to keep working toward our goal of a championship.”

The Bombers begin this year on Saturday, December 9 at the Curry Hicks cage for the Pioneer Valley Tip-Off. The Bombers will face off against the Longmeadow Lancers who they haven’t seen in five years.
